CommonWell Health Alliance

CommonWell Health Alliance is a not-for-profit nationwide health data exchange network founded in 2013 by EHR vendors. Designated a QHIN under TEFCA, CommonWell connects ~30,000+ provider sites and exchanges with Carequality and other networks.

What CommonWell does

CommonWell provides cross-vendor patient identity matching and document exchange. When a provider in CommonWell looks up a patient, the network locates records held by other CommonWell-participating providers and returns them as standardized C-CDA documents. This works across EHR vendors that historically didn't share data well.

CommonWell-Carequality bridge

Pre-TEFCA, CommonWell and Carequality (the Epic-led peer network) operated separately. A bridge agreement from 2018 onward enabled cross-network exchange. TEFCA now provides a more uniform framework; both CommonWell and major Carequality-participating networks have either become QHINs or work through QHINs.

Where Vizier fits

Vizier reads from the EHR connector at the customer organization. If that organization participates in CommonWell, the cross-organization patient records pulled in via CommonWell are part of the EHR's consolidated patient view that Vizier analyzes — no separate CommonWell integration required.
